Before we get into what makes the Barracuda BC37 Stun Gun, the best stun gun, in my opinion, let’s first talk about what a stun gun is supposed to do. There are many people out there with the wrong idea as to what any stun gun is supposed to accomplish.
Is a stun gun supposed to make anyone touched with it instantly drop to the ground and flop around like a fish? No. But, sadly, this is what many people think. A stun gun works initially on people’s fear of being shocked. Just like a dog collar, being shocked is not a fun thing and is quite repulsive. Being shocked, at any level, even a 9v battery to the tongue, is not generally considered a fun experience. So, people knowingly want to stay away from being shocked. Its known to be a “negative burst of energy”. So, that first level of deterrent comes in from someone simply having a stun gun in their hand and test firing it. That’s the first level of what a stun gun does. It visually deters a would be attacker.
The second level of what a stun gun does comes into play by its technical specs. There are really two specs to look at. The first is voltage. The second is amperage. The voltage of a stun gun determines how thick of clothing or fur the stun gun can penetrate. Less voltage means less penetration. The amperage of a stun gun determines how quickly someone is affected by the stun. Higher amperage means quicker affect. 1-2 milliamps is generally something that, again, while no one WANTS to feel this, can be taken by the human body for several seconds before causing someone to fully back off. 3 milliamps is what most stun guns work with and will cause some disorientation, and yes, possibly even physical incapacitation, possibly causing someone to fall to the ground. 4-4.5 milliamps is generally so much that very few bodies can withstand it for more than a second or two at best. Many people become somewhat confused and disoriented with this level of amperage going through their body. I’ve even seen a youtube video where some guy puts in a football bite protector to take this much amperage. Kinda funny to watch as his point is that stun guns aren’t effective. Yet, he has to suit up like that even sort of stumbles a second after taking the hit. But, that’s for another article.
Anyway, now that we know what a stun gun is designed to do, what makes the Barracuda BC37 the best stun gun? Well, as a visual deterrent, the sound and spark made by this thing is the most horrific sounding and looking spark you’ll see on any stun gun. Dogs freak out and leave the room. People jump when you test fire it. It gets your attention. The voltage is 3.7 million volts which is usually enough to penetrate up to, say a leather bomber. And, the amperage is 4.5 milliamps which is the highest of any stun gun on the market and is just under that 5 milliamp mark we noted earlier as being lethal.
Add to the technical specs the fact that the battery is rechargeable and is a Nickel Metal Hydride battery, which, without going into all the technical support for this, is simply the best quality of battery to use and few stun gun makers use them due to their expense. Also, the Barracuda BC37 is the only stun gun to use a double battery system for added life and extra power. The A/C Charger is also built in so the owner doesn’t have to keep up with a separate charger allowing the owner to keep the unit sufficiently charged quite easily. And, finally, but no less significant than the rest of these points, is that the unit comes with a safety disable pin, which when used, if an attacker tries to take away the unit from the owner, the pin pulls out and the stun gun simply cannot work and, thus, cannot be used on its owner.
