Stun Gun -vs- TASER Gun

We get asked all the time, “what’s the difference between a stun gun and a TASER Gun?”.  This should help clarify….

A stun gun is a self defense weapon that utilizes high voltage and relatively high amperage and requires direct contact between the weapon and the subject.  The user has to directly touch the attacker with the weapon.  And, in so doing, causes some level of pain and discomfort, as well as possible mental disorientation.  This allows the user time to get away.

A TASER Gun is a brand, not just a type, of self defense weapon that utilizes relatively low voltage and amperage and allows the user to shoot electrodes up to 15 feet outward towards the subject.  The user is afforded this 15 feet of distance as an increased level of safety.  (note:  several of the PHAZZER brand of weapons, also a brand, function in this same way; they shoot outward)  This technology, while being somewhat lower voltage and amperage, generates a frequency of electricity which mimics that of the human central nervous system/brain.  So, when this current is injected into the body, the body doesn’t know what to do with this extra electricity and goes into “overdrive” thus causing the target’s muscles to freak out.

Here are two videos to further demonstrate the difference:

Does it Make Sense to Get a Stun Gun?

Ultimately, the answer to whether you should get a stun gun has to be answered by you.  However, there are several things we can point out to help you consider your purchase.

First, you must know what  a stun gun is designed to do and how they work.  Initially, a stun gun is designed to be a visual deterrent.Stun Gun  When face to face with an attacker, you want a stun gun that will make a loud ZAP! into the air letting the person know you’re about to shock the crap out of them.  And, quite honestly, there are many levels of stun guns out there, each which deliver varying levels of loudness.  The loudest one is easily the Barracuda BC37.  However, there are some that are a little less expensive which also deliver a fairly strong ZAP into the air.  Your goal at this stage of contact with an attacker is to prevent a full on attack.  So, again, a loud and bright spark is what you’re wanting.

Secondarily, a stun gun has to be able to deliver on what it’s supposed to do.  So, here, let’s discuss what a stun gun is supposed to do.  Many people incorrectly believe that a stun gun, with just a split second of contact with another is person, is supposed to knock the person to the ground for 30-60 seconds, giving the user time to get away.  And, while this MAY happen from time to time, every person is different.

A stun gun is designed to shock whomever it is applied to, plain and simple.  Do YOU like to be shocked?  Not many people do and that’s what a stun gun works with.  FEAR.  Flat out, people don’t like to be shocked. Not by static electricity.  Not by a 9v battery to the tongue.  Now, obviously, if you apply only a slight bit of electricity, like static electricity to someone, will that put them on the ground?  Probably not.  A good quality stun gun, however, should deliver much more than static electricity, and they do.  Most stun guns deliver 3 milliamps of current to their target.  This level is generally enough, after 3-5 seconds of direct contact, to cause most people to become disoriented and potentially fall to the ground unable to control their muscles.  The stun gun that delivers the highest amperage, again, the Barracuda BC37, delivers 4.5 milliamps of current.   This level is generally enough to be effective after only 2-3 seconds of contact.  Note:  5 milliamps of current is considered lethal, so the BC37 gets as closer to this level of electricity than any other stun gun.

zap stun batonFinally, there are different types and shapes of stun guns.  Most stun guns are small and fit snugly into the palm of the user’s hand.  A stun baton gives the user a little bit longer reach, and are commonly used to protect against attacking dogs, yet it won’t kill them.  Flashlight stun guns offer a flashlight with the added benefit of extra protection in the form of a stun gun built into the unit.  A stun cane is even longer than a stun baton, again, further increasing the distance between the user and the attacker.  Finally, a TASER Gun (also some units from PHAZZER) have the ability of actually shooting electrodes outward up to 15 feet, thus giving the user even further distance between them and the attacker.  This technology is noticeably more expensive, but for those who want the distance, they feel this cost is worth it.

One other note we commonly get asked:  If you are shocking someone with a stun gun and they touch you, the user, will you be shocked?  The answer is “NO”.  The current will not pass through your target and come back into you.

What are Stun Guns?

A lot of people use the phrase “Taser Gun” when they’re really meaning “Stun Gun”.  So, what’s the difference?

Stun Guns are handheld, electrical devices designed to deliver a big shock to whomever its being used on.  They require that the holderstun guns actually touches the body/skin of the target with the stun guns electrodes while depressing the button which activates the unit.  A TASER Gun, on the other hand, is also a handheld electrical device designed to deliver a shock to whomever it is being used on.  However, a Taser gun is a brand of these weapons AND, to date, all Taser brand guns actually shoot the electrodes outward towards the attacker.  The use of a TASER gun does NOT require the user to physically touch the target, since the electrodes can shoot out up to 15 feet.

There are several types of stun guns, most being smaller, fit into the hand size units.  Most are between 4-7 inches long and fit easily into most peoples’ hands.  There are also stun batons, which are typically 15-18 inches long and allow the user to have a longer reach.  Stun Batons are well known to be a great defense against attacking dogs, as the user can more easily insert the baton into a couple of fighting dogs than the smaller stun gun.  And, there’s even a stun cane available now, too.  Which provides even greater reach, yet still not as much as a TASER Gun, while providing walking support for a person up to 250 lbs in weight.  And, finally, there are also Flashlight Stun Guns which are real, functioning flashlights that also have a stun gun’s ability to of shocking someone built into the unit.

Reminder: TASER Flashlight

Just a reminder, here, that TASER will be releasing their very first Flashlight Taser this summer.  It will NOT shoot electrodes out, rather, it will be a direct contact flashlight stun gun.

This is the first weapon from TASER that will not shoot outward.  Of course, all other TASER guns shoot electrodes.  We’ve not been given any more specs at this time.  As soon as we have more info, we’ll most certainly release it here.

The Enforcer by Phazzer

Many people are familiar with the TASER brand of guns, like the TASER X26 that the police carry or the M26C that is the most popular for civilians.  But, not everyone is aware of a very strong competitor to the TASER line of self defense weapons.  Their name is Phazzer.  And, not only do they offer direct contact stun guns, but they also offer the shooting style of stun guns.   And, most notably, is the Phazzer Enforcer.

Phazzer EnforcerThe Phazzer Enforcer is similar in size to the X26, but is priced much less.  Generally, you’ll find it for around $600, compared to the X26 at $900-1000.  They both work almost identically when it comes to the technical specs.  But, Phazzer also makes their own cartridges.  Now, what makes these cartridges unique is two-fold.  First, the coiling process that Phazzer utilizes when wrapping the wires inside the cartridge is such that it allows for less tangling.  Less tangling means more hitting of your target.  If the wires get tangled, they cannot shoot as straight nor as far.  For this reason, Phazzer is able to claim a higher effectiveness rating of their guns when using their cartridges.

Now, secondly, their cartridges are interchangeable and can be used in TASER guns.  That’s right.  The Phazzer cartridges can be used in the M26C and the X26C.  So, even if you own one of these models, you can gain the greater effectiveness that Phazzer offers.

Oh, and let me know forget to mention that Phazzer offers more than just the electrical dart cartridge.  They also offer pepper powder, pepper ball, paint ball, rubber ball and training cartridges.  Find out why they are so hot on the heals of TASER.

Which Stun Baton to Get?

Stun Batons are about as popular as most stun guns, overall.  In fact, stun baton sales make up just over 40% of our sales.  But, which one should you get?  The answer is not easy as saying one model is the best and that’s the one you should get.

I can tell you, however, there are 3 or 4 really popular models.  One we sell the most of is the ZAP Stun Baton.  Its size makes it comfortable for virtually everyone to carry.  Its not too big, nor too small.  It has electrodes in more places than just the tip, it even has them underneath the wrap around handle so that if you have to swing at someone, you’re more likely to hit them with the electrified electrodes.  This stun baton has a rechargeable battery built into it and even offers a flashlight to allow for double duty.

The Omega Super Baton is also a very commonly purchased stun baton, as is the Omega Star Warrior.  The Super Baton is one of the longest made, giving the user a little bit more reach, and thus distance between them and the attacker.  The Star Warrior is unique in that it sends electrical sparks up and down the shaft making a visually menacing display that pretty much scares the crap out of anyone face to face with the baton.  Both made by Omega, which is a company that’s been around since the mid-1980’s and is one of the original stun gun makers.  They are both designed in the U.S. and, while manufactured in China, are not cheap chinese toys.

These are just 3 models of stun batons that we carry and are easily some of the best.  If we can help anyone select which model might be the best for their particular use, please contact us through SmartStun.com.  And, by the way, stun batons are the most common use for stun gun protection against attacking dogs.

Stun Guns

Many people having differing views on the effectiveness of stun guns.  And, its very understandable when you look at the market as a whole.  Here’s what I mean….

Some stun guns are good.  Some stun guns are cheap and crappy.  And, some stun guns are exceptional.  Its because of this diversity in quality of products that people have had differing experiences after purchasing these self defense weapons.

For instance, you find an 8 million volt stun gun online for $30-50.  Well, technically speaking, the only way to generate this much voltage is to reduce the amount of amperage that the weapon puts out.  And, amperage is actually what stops someone.  Amperage is what they feel.  Voltage is important, yes, as its what delivers the amperage, the SHOCK!  But, high voltage by itself won’t stop anyone.   A battery can only generate so much electricity.  And, when voltage is pushed  up, the only thing that can happen is that amperage has to be reduced.

So, what you want here is a nice blend of high voltage and high amperage.  So, when looking at stun guns in the 3-4 million volt range, you will find a sufficiently high amperage can still be generated.  The average, good quality stun gun generates about 3 milliamps of amperage and this is enough to make your attacker back off.  And, there’s even one stun gun brand that delivers this level of voltage, but has found a way of increasing the amperage to 4.5 milliamps by redesigning the built in battery they use.  This model is the Barracuda BC37.  It generates 3.7 million volts and delivers 4.5 milliamps.  When you consider that 5 milliamps is considered lethal, you’ll soon realize that 4.5 is right below that threshold and will most certainly deliver the most stopping power.

Does a Stun Gun Work?

In order to answer this question, we must first define what a stun gun is supposed to do.  So many people think that a stun gun is supposed to instantly drop someone to the ground and leave them unable to get up with just an instant of contact.  This is simply not the case.  Anything that acted this quickly, would most certainly kill.

So, what is a stun gun supposed to do?  Well, first, a stun gun is designed to instill fear into someone who sees you have one.  Preventing an attack is much better than winning an attack.  And, think of this:  Do you like to be shocked?  Do you even like the little bursts of static electricity shocks that happen throughout the course of a day?  Do you like the shock of a 9v battery on your tongue?  I can’t say that I’ve ever met anyone who LIKES the feeling.  And, knowing that a good quality stun gun generates SUBSTANTIALLY more electricity than static electricity or that of a 9v battery, most people, upon seeing a stun gun being test fired into the air will not want to come into contact with it.  So, if that alone scares off an attacker, the stun gun has worked.

Secondly, a stun gun is designed to cause severe discomfort, mental instability, and yes, possibly, causing a person to be physically disabled to the point of falling to the ground, when actually applied to the person.  But, does all this happen with just an instant of contact?  No.  The amount of amperage determines how long a stun gun has to be applied to cause these effects.  Most good quality stun guns generate about 3 milliamps of electrical current.  (notice we’re talking amperage here and not voltage….voltage is an entirely different subject and does not determine how effective a stun gun is).  And, 3 milliamps of current will generally take between 3-5 seconds of direct contact to cause these effects to occur.  The highest stun gun out there, the Barracuda BC37, generates 4.5 milliamps of electrical current, while 5 milliamps is considered lethal, or deadly.  So, 4.5 milliamps is right below the threshold of what will kill someone.  And, at this level of electrical current, generally 1-3 seconds of direct contact is required to cause these effects.

Now, will all that said, there are many, many, many cheap stun guns on the market that will not really do anything more than that 9v battery on the tongue kind of thing.  So, you do have to make sure you’re dealing with a high quality stun gun to begin with.  And, even at that, just as some people can take a bullet and still move forward, there are some people who can take a shock and still move forward.  So, there is virtually no self defense weapon that works on 100% of the people, 100% of the time.

And, so, if you have a high quality stun gun that can prevent an attack and/or that can cause most people enough severe pain and mental instability, then, yes, you have a stun gun that works.  If you have a cheap stun gun, then, no, it probably won’t work.

Why Carry a Stun Gun?

First, Why Not?  I mean, if you’re not in a locale where stun guns are restricted, why wouldn’t you carry a stun gun, or at least some form of self defense weapon?  With the poor economic conditions getting worse all around the country, crime is spreading at a rapid rate.  I was sitting behind our retail store last week getting a little sunshine between customers when a guy approached me and I could tell he was up to no good.  Fortunately, I was near our door and I did some quick talking to get away from him and safely inside.  But, I had no weapon on me.  If he had pulled a knife or even just demanded that I give him my wallet, I might have had to just to keep things smooth.

So, why not carry a stun gun?  I mean, let’s say its dark, you’re coming out of the mall or the grocery store or Wal-Mart and someone comes up and demands your purse or wallet.  What are you going to do?  If you had a stun gun in a holster on your belt or perhaps, in your purse, simply setting off a quick test fire may be all that’s needed to set the mugger running off.  While he may not be caught by the police, at least your safe.  I can assure you that you have a much better chance of being safe with a good quality stun gun in your hand than you do if you have nothing.  And, let’s be real, its not quite comfortable to walk around everywhere with a handgun on your hip.  So, in many cases, a stun gun is a much more suitable alternative.

Best Stun Gun Manufacturer

Oftentimes, we get asked “Who makes the best stun gun?”.  And, of course, this can only truly be answered by defining what makes a stun gun the best one.  I mean, are we talking technical specs?  Are we talking overall quality?  Are we talking about how long it’ll last?  All these things can define which is the best.

So, let’s just look at overall quality, today.  And, in doing so, that’ brings two manufacturers to mind.  The first is Over the Counter Intelligence, the maker of the Barracuda Stun Guns.  The second is Omega, the maker of the Omega Stun Guns.

Over the Counter Intelligence set out early on the build not only the stun gun with the best technical specs, but also the line of weapons that will last for years.  So, not only do their stun guns generate the highest amperage, which is what actually does the “stopping” when applied to a person, but they also have the best battery design.  This helps them to last decades, not just years.

And, Omega is one of the first two manufacturers to ever develop stun guns and stun batons.  They began back in the 1980’s.  And, while their designs haven’t necessarily changed much since then, they haven’t needed to.  You see, the Omega line of stun guns, while somewhat lower in voltage and amperage than most models today, remain effective due to the frequency of the amperage they generate.  I won’t get into the technical “know how” of how it works, as it would take much more than a blog post to explain it.  But, their stun guns sell just as well today as they did 3 decades ago.  Again, if they have this kind of staying power in the marketplace, they have to be considered among the best.
