Stun Guns

Many people having differing views on the effectiveness of stun guns.  And, its very understandable when you look at the market as a whole....

The Enforcer by Phazzer

Many people are familiar with the TASER brand of guns, like the TASER X26 that the police carry or the M26C that is the most popular for civilians.  But, not everyone is aware of a very strong competitor to the TASER line of self defense weapons.  Their name is Phazzer.  And, not only do they offer direct contact stun guns, but they also offer the shooting style of stun guns.   And, most notably, is the Phazzer Enforcer.

Phazzer EnforcerThe Phazzer Enforcer is similar in size to the X26, but is priced much less.  Generally, you’ll find it for around $600, compared to the X26 at $900-1000.  They both work almost identically when it comes to the technical specs.  But, Phazzer also makes their own cartridges.  Now, what makes these cartridges unique is two-fold.  First, the coiling process that Phazzer utilizes when wrapping the wires inside the cartridge is such that it allows for less tangling.  Less tangling means more hitting of your target.  If the wires get tangled, they cannot shoot as straight nor as far.  For this reason, Phazzer is able to claim a higher effectiveness rating of their guns when using their cartridges.

Now, secondly, their cartridges are interchangeable and can be used in TASER guns.  That’s right.  The Phazzer cartridges can be used in the M26C and the X26C.  So, even if you own one of these models, you can gain the greater effectiveness that Phazzer offers.

Oh, and let me know forget to mention that Phazzer offers more than just the electrical dart cartridge.  They also offer pepper powder, pepper ball, paint ball, rubber ball and training cartridges.  Find out why they are so hot on the heals of TASER.

Which Stun Baton to Get?

Stun Batons are about as popular as most stun guns, overall.  In fact, stun baton sales make up just over 40% of our sales.  But, which one should you get?  The answer is not easy as saying one model is the best and that’s the one you should get.

I can tell you, however, there are 3 or 4 really popular models.  One we sell the most of is the ZAP Stun Baton.  Its size makes it comfortable for virtually everyone to carry.  Its not too big, nor too small.  It has electrodes in more places than just the tip, it even has them underneath the wrap around handle so that if you have to swing at someone, you’re more likely to hit them with the electrified electrodes.  This stun baton has a rechargeable battery built into it and even offers a flashlight to allow for double duty.

The Omega Super Baton is also a very commonly purchased stun baton, as is the Omega Star Warrior.  The Super Baton is one of the longest made, giving the user a little bit more reach, and thus distance between them and the attacker.  The Star Warrior is unique in that it sends electrical sparks up and down the shaft making a visually menacing display that pretty much scares the crap out of anyone face to face with the baton.  Both made by Omega, which is a company that’s been around since the mid-1980’s and is one of the original stun gun makers.  They are both designed in the U.S. and, while manufactured in China, are not cheap chinese toys.

These are just 3 models of stun batons that we carry and are easily some of the best.  If we can help anyone select which model might be the best for their particular use, please contact us through SmartStun.com.  And, by the way, stun batons are the most common use for stun gun protection against attacking dogs.

Does a Stun Gun Work?

In order to answer this question, we must first define what a stun gun is supposed to do.  So many people think that a stun gun is supposed to instantly drop someone to the ground and leave them unable to get up with just an instant of contact.  This is simply not the case.  Anything that acted this quickly, would most certainly kill.

So, what is a stun gun supposed to do?  Well, first, a stun gun is designed to instill fear into someone who sees you have one.  Preventing an attack is much better than winning an attack.  And, think of this:  Do you like to be shocked?  Do you even like the little bursts of static electricity shocks that happen throughout the course of a day?  Do you like the shock of a 9v battery on your tongue?  I can’t say that I’ve ever met anyone who LIKES the feeling.  And, knowing that a good quality stun gun generates SUBSTANTIALLY more electricity than static electricity or that of a 9v battery, most people, upon seeing a stun gun being test fired into the air will not want to come into contact with it.  So, if that alone scares off an attacker, the stun gun has worked.

Secondly, a stun gun is designed to cause severe discomfort, mental instability, and yes, possibly, causing a person to be physically disabled to the point of falling to the ground, when actually applied to the person.  But, does all this happen with just an instant of contact?  No.  The amount of amperage determines how long a stun gun has to be applied to cause these effects.  Most good quality stun guns generate about 3 milliamps of electrical current.  (notice we’re talking amperage here and not voltage….voltage is an entirely different subject and does not determine how effective a stun gun is).  And, 3 milliamps of current will generally take between 3-5 seconds of direct contact to cause these effects to occur.  The highest stun gun out there, the Barracuda BC37, generates 4.5 milliamps of electrical current, while 5 milliamps is considered lethal, or deadly.  So, 4.5 milliamps is right below the threshold of what will kill someone.  And, at this level of electrical current, generally 1-3 seconds of direct contact is required to cause these effects.

Now, will all that said, there are many, many, many cheap stun guns on the market that will not really do anything more than that 9v battery on the tongue kind of thing.  So, you do have to make sure you’re dealing with a high quality stun gun to begin with.  And, even at that, just as some people can take a bullet and still move forward, there are some people who can take a shock and still move forward.  So, there is virtually no self defense weapon that works on 100% of the people, 100% of the time.

And, so, if you have a high quality stun gun that can prevent an attack and/or that can cause most people enough severe pain and mental instability, then, yes, you have a stun gun that works.  If you have a cheap stun gun, then, no, it probably won’t work.

Have you been busted by a Nanny Cam?

Some people know what a Nanny Cam is and some people don’t.  If you’re in the latter group, you might just want to be careful if you’re up to things you shouldn’t be.

You see, a Nanny Cam is a an everyday looking object; something like an alarm clock, boombox, even a watch or car key remote.Nanny Cam  However, its not JUST an everyday object.  Inside is a camera and a recording device (DVR), and some even have microphones built in.  So, what? you say.

Well, if someone suspects you’re up to something, let’s say, cheating on your spouse, hitting the kids  you’re supposed to be babysitting or stealing office supplies, the owner of the place may have installed a Nanny Cam.  And, the next time you go into the office supply closet or have a clandestine encounter with you know who, they may just be able to get the video surveillance they need to bust you.

These handy cameras with DVR’s can be used for other good, too.  We use one in our house to spy on our dogs when we’re not home.  Most times, there’s nothing really to see.  But, every once in a while, we get some funny stuff worth sharing.

Why Carry a Stun Gun?

First, Why Not?  I mean, if you’re not in a locale where stun guns are restricted, why wouldn’t you carry a stun gun, or at least some form of self defense weapon?  With the poor economic conditions getting worse all around the country, crime is spreading at a rapid rate.  I was sitting behind our retail store last week getting a little sunshine between customers when a guy approached me and I could tell he was up to no good.  Fortunately, I was near our door and I did some quick talking to get away from him and safely inside.  But, I had no weapon on me.  If he had pulled a knife or even just demanded that I give him my wallet, I might have had to just to keep things smooth.

So, why not carry a stun gun?  I mean, let’s say its dark, you’re coming out of the mall or the grocery store or Wal-Mart and someone comes up and demands your purse or wallet.  What are you going to do?  If you had a stun gun in a holster on your belt or perhaps, in your purse, simply setting off a quick test fire may be all that’s needed to set the mugger running off.  While he may not be caught by the police, at least your safe.  I can assure you that you have a much better chance of being safe with a good quality stun gun in your hand than you do if you have nothing.  And, let’s be real, its not quite comfortable to walk around everywhere with a handgun on your hip.  So, in many cases, a stun gun is a much more suitable alternative.

Best Stun Gun Manufacturer

Oftentimes, we get asked “Who makes the best stun gun?”.  And, of course, this can only truly be answered by defining what makes a stun gun the best one.  I mean, are we talking technical specs?  Are we talking overall quality?  Are we talking about how long it’ll last?  All these things can define which is the best.

So, let’s just look at overall quality, today.  And, in doing so, that’ brings two manufacturers to mind.  The first is Over the Counter Intelligence, the maker of the Barracuda Stun Guns.  The second is Omega, the maker of the Omega Stun Guns.

Over the Counter Intelligence set out early on the build not only the stun gun with the best technical specs, but also the line of weapons that will last for years.  So, not only do their stun guns generate the highest amperage, which is what actually does the “stopping” when applied to a person, but they also have the best battery design.  This helps them to last decades, not just years.

And, Omega is one of the first two manufacturers to ever develop stun guns and stun batons.  They began back in the 1980’s.  And, while their designs haven’t necessarily changed much since then, they haven’t needed to.  You see, the Omega line of stun guns, while somewhat lower in voltage and amperage than most models today, remain effective due to the frequency of the amperage they generate.  I won’t get into the technical “know how” of how it works, as it would take much more than a blog post to explain it.  But, their stun guns sell just as well today as they did 3 decades ago.  Again, if they have this kind of staying power in the marketplace, they have to be considered among the best.

Flashlight Stun Gun from ZAP

The ZAP Brand of self defense products has been around for a while and is manufactured by PS Products.  This company is unique in the industry as they design and have their own products manufactured, rather than taking on some of the cheap chinese products and putting their name on them.  PS Products holds patents on the design of their weapons, as many of their stun guns and such are unique to them.

zap flashlight stun gun

For instance, the new ZAP Enforcer Professional Grade Flashlight Stun Gun is one that can only be gotten from ZAP.  There is not another unit like it out there that is sold under another brand.  This unit is 2 million volt, heavy duty flashlight with display on it that lets the user know how much charge is left on the battery.

The ZAPL, 1 million volt flashlight stun gun and the the ZAPLTE, 1 Million volt Extreme Flashlight Stun Gun are also 2 unique models that cannot be gotten under any other brands.

All 3 of these units are of the highest quality, and while they are all manufactured in China, they are only done so according to the specs of PS Products.  Whereas many stun guns are designed and made in China, then marketed to US companies who then put their name on them. So, if you see anything from ZAP or PS Products, you can rest assured you’re getting the best in self defense.

Coming Soon: Flashlight Stun Gun from TASER

You read that right!  Due out sometime this summer, 2013, TASER will be releasing their first Flashlight Stun Gun.  No specs have been released yet, and they’ve not even determined the price at which it will be sold.  But, its coming.

About the only information we know at this time is that it will be a direct contact stun gun.  It will not shoot electrodes out like all other TASER gun models do.  So, this is the first departure away from the true TASER technology.  Its going to be interesting to see if they go with a higher voltage and amperage stun gun than what they currently put out or if they’re going to keep the specs low and integrate in their neuro-muscular incapacitation (NMI) technology.

Stay tuned and know that you can get it just as soon as its available through SmartStun!

If you’re Wanting a JPX Jet Protector, Get Ready Now

JPX Jet ProtectorAs of this week, the JPX Jet Protector is having a limitation put on it due to supply troubles.  The Orange Jpx Jet Protector with Laser is being reserved for only Law Enforcement agencies in the United States.  It seems that Piexon is having a very difficult time keeping up with all the demand and they’re not able to supply all the jet protectors that are being ordered.

According to Piexon in Switzerland, European Citizens are fearing a complete collapse of their land’s economic system.  Cyprus was just the beginning, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal are very near the same thing happening.  Essentially a full scale collapse of the Euro is in the works.  When this begins happening, riots to a scale not seen in our lifetime will ensue.  Not only are law enforcement agencies in Europe preparing, but civilians are also getting the pepper guns, too, even though they’re not legal in Europe for civilians.  Go figure.  Keep the weapons away from the citizens.  Sounds like another country I know quite well.

Anyway, because the US Law Enforcement agencies are expecting similar riots here in the US after the Euro falls and the US Dollar becomes toast, which is was our government is planning for, the JPX Jet Protector is in limited supply.  And, the US Distributor has said  that they are reserving the orange model with laser for law enforcement agencies only.  The Black model with laser is still available to US Citizens and the model without laser is still available in both colors.

Further, since Piexon is focusing on producing live ammunition, they are having trouble supplying training cartridges.  As such, the training cartridges are currently on back order in the US.

So, if you’re thinking of getting one of these awesome units, don’t delay.  They may not be available when you’re planning to buy one.
