Get a Stun Gun

Okay, so you want to get a stun gun, right?  But, which one?  I mean, there are a lot of different makes and models of these self defense weapons out there.  How do you know which one to get?

Well, its really quite an individual thing.  I mean, some people might need a hand held stun gun and some people might need a stun baton for their particular situation.  So, when you go to get a stun gun, you have to decide which type will best suit your needs.  But, we can tell you a few things to look for.

First, look for a high amperage model.  Most makers and sellers are pushing ultra high voltages of 5 million volts and more.  While voltage is something to consider, its not the most important factor.  In fact, typically, to get high voltage, the maker has to reduce the amperage.  That’s very unfortunate, because its actually the amperage that stops someone.  Its the current, or amperage that gets into someone’s muscles and causes them to spasm and fatigue.  If high voltage is only delivering a little bit of amperage, you’re not going to stop anyone.  3 milliamps is pretty common, and the highest amperage models are the Barracuda BC10 and BC37 stun guns.  They each deliver about 4.5 milliamps, this is 50% more than the average.

A strong battery is also essential, since this is the power source of the electric shock.  If its a a rechargeable stun gun, you want one that utilizes Ni-MH batteries.  In short, these are the only types you want.  If the unit works off of 9v batteries, you want one that requires 2 – 9v batteries, not just one.

Finally, make sure whomever you buy from has a satisfaction guarantee and that they’ll back it up.  All too often, we hear of people buying something that ‘sounds” great on the website, but once they get it, only makes a little tingle on the electrodes.  If that happens to you, get your money back and shop at SmartStun

Is a Stun Gun Effective?

There are a lot of comments out there as to whether a stun gun is effective.  And, as most people do, I have an opinion.

effective stun gunFirst, I think we have to identify what  stun gun is designed to do, because many people think they’re supposed to instantly cause someone to fall down and have them quiver on the ground uncontrollably.  And, while this might actually happen, its not what a real stun gun is designed to do.

A stun gun is designed to at first, look menacing as hell to hopefully prevent someone from coming forward towards the victim.  And, unfortunately, there are many crappy quality stun guns out there that don’t put off enough of a spark to make anyone really care that you have it in your hands.  Second, these weapons, if used, are designed after several seconds of contact, not instantly (note I said after several seconds), to repel an attacker.  They may or may not fall to the ground.  But, if the weapon has enough amperage, it will cause whomever is receiving the jolt to back off.  And, this is what a stun gun is designed to do.  And, third, once again, if its used for several seconds on an attacker and it has enough amperage, the attacker will most likely be disoriented enough to not be able to move forward.  Potentially, they may fall to the ground.  But, at least they’re “stunned” enough to give the victim time to get away.

And, this is what a stun gun is designed to do.  But, notice also, that I said that the weapons need to have enough amperage.  So, what is enough amperage?  Well, 5 milliamps is considered lethal (deadly).  Most cheap chinese stun guns generate a whole 1 milliamp or so.  This is negligible when it comes to stopping someone.  Most average to good units will deliver about 3 milliamps and this is effective if they are applied for 4-5 seconds to the average human.  The highest amperage stun gun is the Barracuda BC37 and BC10 which deliver 4.5 milliamps (just under that 5 milliamp mark) and they will deliver the “stun” when applied for 2-3 seconds onto the average human.

So, again, its important to know what a stun gun is designed to do and what makes an effective stun gun.  Just like anything else in life, when you buy a cheap piece of crap, you get crappy results.  But, when you buy good quality, you get good results.
