Which Stun Gun is the Best?

Let’s face it, there are way too many choices out there for stun guns.  And, unfortunately, so many sites are carrying and selling some models just for the sake of making a buck and don’t really care about your safety, but instead care about their financial performance.

Just search Ebay for stun guns and you’ll see so many offers come up.  And, while there are a few decent models on there, most, quite honestly, are pure crap.  And, if you carry one of these stun guns feeling that you’re gonna be safe if you come face to face with someone, you’re gonna end up getting hurt instead.  You will have in your hand nothing more than a cute little spark maker that does no more than make your attacker laugh at you for being so gullible.

So, if this is true, which it is, which one should you get?   Well, quite honestly, there are several brands and models that are effective.  So, as long as you are carrying one of these, you’ll have some real protection.  And, which one is the Best Stun Gun?  Well, that comes down to determining which stun gun you’ll actually carry when you are face to face with someone.  What do I mean?  Simple….

So, often, people buy a stun gun or pepper spray or some self defense weapon.  And, for a while, they’re diligent about carrying it.  But, then, after a while, when nothing has happened, they get lax or lazy and slowly stop carrying it.  Maybe the batteries have run out and they’ve not been replaced.  Whatever the case, they simply stop carrying it.  So, what difference does it make which one is any good if the owner isn’t going to carry it.  So, from the list below, choose the model that you believe you will actually carry.  The list below is comprised of makes and models that are proven to be highly effective and many industry experts consider to be the best stun guns:

Barracuda BC37 Stun Gun, Omega Star Warrior Stun Baton, Omega Super Stunner Stun Gun, Runt Stun Gun (Runt 4.5 Million volt models only….the newer ultra high voltage models of 10 million volts are nothing more than cheaply made toys), ZAP Double Trouble Stun Gun, and any TASER Brand TASER Gun.

The Best Stun Gun is the One You’ll Carry

That’s right, the best stun gun is the one you’ll carry.  What good is buying a high performance stun gun or taser gun if all you’re gonna do is leave it in your purse?  Or, maybe you leave it at home because you haven’t bought fresh batteries for it.  What good is that?  None!

While we’ve been very clear, technically speaking, we feel the Barracuda BC37 is the best stun gun on the market, if you don’t carry it but, instead, will carry a stun baton, then the stun baton would be the best stun gun for you to get.  I know this sounds obvious.  But, you’d be surprised to hear what all I hear when it comes to people buying, then, not carrying their weapons.

People do a lot of researching and asking questions, almost to the point of never doing anything for fear of making the wrong decision.  Then, they make their purchase.  And, they carry their weapon for a few weeks.  But, then, the batteries die and they don’t replace them.  Or, they lose the AC charger.  Or, they misplace their stun gun.  Or, they leave it in their purse, buried under lipstick and tons of other crap.  Then, one day, BAM!  They’re face to face with someone wanting their wallet or purse.  They have no choice.

They wasted their money in buying a stun gun.  And, now they’ve wasted their pride and much more.  So, we applaud you for doing your research.  But, be sure to follow through.  People are counting on you coming home safely.

Get a Stun Gun

Okay, so you want to get a stun gun, right?  But, which one?  I mean, there are a lot of different makes and models of these self defense weapons out there.  How do you know which one to get?

Well, its really quite an individual thing.  I mean, some people might need a hand held stun gun and some people might need a stun baton for their particular situation.  So, when you go to get a stun gun, you have to decide which type will best suit your needs.  But, we can tell you a few things to look for.

First, look for a high amperage model.  Most makers and sellers are pushing ultra high voltages of 5 million volts and more.  While voltage is something to consider, its not the most important factor.  In fact, typically, to get high voltage, the maker has to reduce the amperage.  That’s very unfortunate, because its actually the amperage that stops someone.  Its the current, or amperage that gets into someone’s muscles and causes them to spasm and fatigue.  If high voltage is only delivering a little bit of amperage, you’re not going to stop anyone.  3 milliamps is pretty common, and the highest amperage models are the Barracuda BC10 and BC37 stun guns.  They each deliver about 4.5 milliamps, this is 50% more than the average.

A strong battery is also essential, since this is the power source of the electric shock.  If its a a rechargeable stun gun, you want one that utilizes Ni-MH batteries.  In short, these are the only types you want.  If the unit works off of 9v batteries, you want one that requires 2 – 9v batteries, not just one.

Finally, make sure whomever you buy from has a satisfaction guarantee and that they’ll back it up.  All too often, we hear of people buying something that ‘sounds” great on the website, but once they get it, only makes a little tingle on the electrodes.  If that happens to you, get your money back and shop at SmartStun

Does it Make Sense to Get a Stun Gun?

Ultimately, the answer to whether you should get a stun gun has to be answered by you.  However, there are several things we can point out to help you consider your purchase.

First, you must know what  a stun gun is designed to do and how they work.  Initially, a stun gun is designed to be a visual deterrent.Stun Gun  When face to face with an attacker, you want a stun gun that will make a loud ZAP! into the air letting the person know you’re about to shock the crap out of them.  And, quite honestly, there are many levels of stun guns out there, each which deliver varying levels of loudness.  The loudest one is easily the Barracuda BC37.  However, there are some that are a little less expensive which also deliver a fairly strong ZAP into the air.  Your goal at this stage of contact with an attacker is to prevent a full on attack.  So, again, a loud and bright spark is what you’re wanting.

Secondarily, a stun gun has to be able to deliver on what it’s supposed to do.  So, here, let’s discuss what a stun gun is supposed to do.  Many people incorrectly believe that a stun gun, with just a split second of contact with another is person, is supposed to knock the person to the ground for 30-60 seconds, giving the user time to get away.  And, while this MAY happen from time to time, every person is different.

A stun gun is designed to shock whomever it is applied to, plain and simple.  Do YOU like to be shocked?  Not many people do and that’s what a stun gun works with.  FEAR.  Flat out, people don’t like to be shocked. Not by static electricity.  Not by a 9v battery to the tongue.  Now, obviously, if you apply only a slight bit of electricity, like static electricity to someone, will that put them on the ground?  Probably not.  A good quality stun gun, however, should deliver much more than static electricity, and they do.  Most stun guns deliver 3 milliamps of current to their target.  This level is generally enough, after 3-5 seconds of direct contact, to cause most people to become disoriented and potentially fall to the ground unable to control their muscles.  The stun gun that delivers the highest amperage, again, the Barracuda BC37, delivers 4.5 milliamps of current.   This level is generally enough to be effective after only 2-3 seconds of contact.  Note:  5 milliamps of current is considered lethal, so the BC37 gets as closer to this level of electricity than any other stun gun.

zap stun batonFinally, there are different types and shapes of stun guns.  Most stun guns are small and fit snugly into the palm of the user’s hand.  A stun baton gives the user a little bit longer reach, and are commonly used to protect against attacking dogs, yet it won’t kill them.  Flashlight stun guns offer a flashlight with the added benefit of extra protection in the form of a stun gun built into the unit.  A stun cane is even longer than a stun baton, again, further increasing the distance between the user and the attacker.  Finally, a TASER Gun (also some units from PHAZZER) have the ability of actually shooting electrodes outward up to 15 feet, thus giving the user even further distance between them and the attacker.  This technology is noticeably more expensive, but for those who want the distance, they feel this cost is worth it.

One other note we commonly get asked:  If you are shocking someone with a stun gun and they touch you, the user, will you be shocked?  The answer is “NO”.  The current will not pass through your target and come back into you.

Stun Guns

Many people having differing views on the effectiveness of stun guns.  And, its very understandable when you look at the market as a whole.  Here’s what I mean….

Some stun guns are good.  Some stun guns are cheap and crappy.  And, some stun guns are exceptional.  Its because of this diversity in quality of products that people have had differing experiences after purchasing these self defense weapons.

For instance, you find an 8 million volt stun gun online for $30-50.  Well, technically speaking, the only way to generate this much voltage is to reduce the amount of amperage that the weapon puts out.  And, amperage is actually what stops someone.  Amperage is what they feel.  Voltage is important, yes, as its what delivers the amperage, the SHOCK!  But, high voltage by itself won’t stop anyone.   A battery can only generate so much electricity.  And, when voltage is pushed  up, the only thing that can happen is that amperage has to be reduced.

So, what you want here is a nice blend of high voltage and high amperage.  So, when looking at stun guns in the 3-4 million volt range, you will find a sufficiently high amperage can still be generated.  The average, good quality stun gun generates about 3 milliamps of amperage and this is enough to make your attacker back off.  And, there’s even one stun gun brand that delivers this level of voltage, but has found a way of increasing the amperage to 4.5 milliamps by redesigning the built in battery they use.  This model is the Barracuda BC37.  It generates 3.7 million volts and delivers 4.5 milliamps.  When you consider that 5 milliamps is considered lethal, you’ll soon realize that 4.5 is right below that threshold and will most certainly deliver the most stopping power.

Does a Stun Gun Work?

In order to answer this question, we must first define what a stun gun is supposed to do.  So many people think that a stun gun is supposed to instantly drop someone to the ground and leave them unable to get up with just an instant of contact.  This is simply not the case.  Anything that acted this quickly, would most certainly kill.

So, what is a stun gun supposed to do?  Well, first, a stun gun is designed to instill fear into someone who sees you have one.  Preventing an attack is much better than winning an attack.  And, think of this:  Do you like to be shocked?  Do you even like the little bursts of static electricity shocks that happen throughout the course of a day?  Do you like the shock of a 9v battery on your tongue?  I can’t say that I’ve ever met anyone who LIKES the feeling.  And, knowing that a good quality stun gun generates SUBSTANTIALLY more electricity than static electricity or that of a 9v battery, most people, upon seeing a stun gun being test fired into the air will not want to come into contact with it.  So, if that alone scares off an attacker, the stun gun has worked.

Secondly, a stun gun is designed to cause severe discomfort, mental instability, and yes, possibly, causing a person to be physically disabled to the point of falling to the ground, when actually applied to the person.  But, does all this happen with just an instant of contact?  No.  The amount of amperage determines how long a stun gun has to be applied to cause these effects.  Most good quality stun guns generate about 3 milliamps of electrical current.  (notice we’re talking amperage here and not voltage….voltage is an entirely different subject and does not determine how effective a stun gun is).  And, 3 milliamps of current will generally take between 3-5 seconds of direct contact to cause these effects to occur.  The highest stun gun out there, the Barracuda BC37, generates 4.5 milliamps of electrical current, while 5 milliamps is considered lethal, or deadly.  So, 4.5 milliamps is right below the threshold of what will kill someone.  And, at this level of electrical current, generally 1-3 seconds of direct contact is required to cause these effects.

Now, will all that said, there are many, many, many cheap stun guns on the market that will not really do anything more than that 9v battery on the tongue kind of thing.  So, you do have to make sure you’re dealing with a high quality stun gun to begin with.  And, even at that, just as some people can take a bullet and still move forward, there are some people who can take a shock and still move forward.  So, there is virtually no self defense weapon that works on 100% of the people, 100% of the time.

And, so, if you have a high quality stun gun that can prevent an attack and/or that can cause most people enough severe pain and mental instability, then, yes, you have a stun gun that works.  If you have a cheap stun gun, then, no, it probably won’t work.

Barracuda BC37 – The Best Stun Gun

I get asked quite frequently which stun gun I think is the best.  And, while I first have to find out exactly what type of stun gun someone is wanting, how they’re going to use it, etc so I can help them get the “most appropriate” stun gun for them, when it comes to a general, overall answer of which I think is the best stun gun, its the Barracuda BC37.

Why?  Simple.

The Barracuda BC37 mixes the following attributes like not other model:  It is the highest amperage stun gun at 4.5 milliamps;  It is a verybarracuda bc37 high voltage, not the highest, but still very high at 3.7 million volts;  it has the best battery system, not only utilizing a Ni-MH hydride (which is the best type), but also a dual type of configuration giving it the longest life; has a built in charger, so no one has to keep up with a separate charger; has a disable pin so its rendered useless if someone rips the stun gun from someone’s hand; and, its overall quality and durability is unsurpassed by other brands and models.

So, is this stun gun the “most appropriate” for everyone?  Not necessarily.  If someone wants a weapon to protect against a dog attacking their dog, then something like a stun baton or stun cane is “more appropriate”.  But, if someone simply wants a hand held stun gun for general purpose, then the BC37 is by far the best!

Stun Guns and Batons for Dogs

So, we get asked quite often which model of stun gun or stun baton is best to use against dogs.  While there is no definitive single best unit, there are two features which are really helpful in dealing with an attacking dog situation.  These help both if the dog is attacking your dog and if the dog is potentially attacking you or a person.

First thing to consider is preventing the attack.  If a dog is in pursuit of you or your dog, you want to be able to “shake” their attention, barracuda bc37 to startle them and to get them to rethink what they’re doing.  You want to redirect their attention.  Oftentimes, simply by doing a test fire into the air before they make contact is enough to rattle them and get them to redirect.  However, what’s important here is that the test fire HAS TO BE by a strong stun gun.  I wimpy little “poof” into the air is not going to get anyone’s attention.  But, by using something that has high voltage AND high amperage, like the Barracuda BC37, a sound so loud will be generated that many times, the dog freaks and tucks tail.

zap stun batonNow, if the dog does happen to continue or if the dog is already in “mouth on” attack mode, you want something that can reach in to the fight, thus keeping your body parts as far away as possible.  And, to accomplish this, a stun baton or even a stun cane is a good weapon to have.  A stun baton is typically 15-18 inches in length and a stun cane is generally 30+ inches.  So, either can be used to extend your reach giving you a little distance.

Now, with all this being said, please know that there is no weapon that can be claimed to be 100% effective in any and all situations.  Body chemistry, adrenaline and what have you sometimes comes together to give a freakish situation that even a bullet won’t instantly stop.  But, you’ll increase your odds by having something rather than nothing.  Also, know that stun guns and batons will not permanently harm either the attacking dog, nor your dog should you accidentally touch them.  And, the stun cannot pass from the attacking dog you touch into your dog.

Dog attacks can be quite stressful situations for sure.  Be prepared and know that you’re increasing your chances of safety and that of your dog by carrying some form of stun gun.

Barracuda or Stun Master Stun Guns?

Best Stun Guns of 2013Of course, ultimately, its your call.  However, as on most things in life, I have an opinion.  Stun Master Stun Guns are good.  They have truly been the mainstay of the industry for longer than almost any other stun gun company.  However, I do think that in the past few years, they’ve begun to sacrifice quality a little to offer the market more “flashy” type things.  Integrated flashlights, discreet designs like “lipstick” or cell phone stun guns and other designs are more consumer driven, rather than weapon effectiveness.

Again, don’t get me wrong, they are not bad.  But, in the past few years, Barracuda Stun Guns, I feel, have taken over the top spot for quality stun guns.  They aren’t fancy.  But, they are effective as hell.  They don’t have clever flashlights and such, but they will shock the crap out of whomever you stick it to.  Personally, I carry the BC37 from Barracuda.  Its got the highest amperage of any stun gun on the market, sufficiently high voltage, the best battery type of Ni-MH and the best battery design of a 4 cell battery design, rather than 2 like most others and a disable pin.  Its got everything you’d need in a stun gun and I believe they are the best stun guns of 2013.

If you want a flashlight, buy a flashlight.  If you need lipstick, get some Maybelline.

Barracuda BC37 Stun Gun

Before we get into what makes the Barracuda BC37 Stun Gun, the best stun gun, in my opinion, let’s first talk about what a stunbarracuda bc37 gun is supposed to do.  There are many people out there with the wrong idea as to what any stun gun is supposed to accomplish.

Is a stun gun supposed to make anyone touched with it instantly drop to the ground and flop around like a fish?  No.  But, sadly, this is what many people think.  A stun gun works initially on people’s fear of being shocked.  Just like a dog collar, being shocked is not a fun thing and is quite repulsive.  Being shocked, at any level, even a 9v battery to the tongue, is not generally considered a fun experience.  So, people knowingly want to stay away from being shocked.  Its known to be a “negative burst of energy”.  So, that first level of deterrent comes in from someone simply having a stun gun in their hand and test firing it.  That’s the first level of what a stun gun does.  It visually deters a would be attacker.

The second level of what a stun gun does comes into play by its technical specs.  There are really two specs to look at.  The first is voltage. The second is amperage.  The voltage of a stun gun determines how thick of clothing or fur the stun gun can penetrate.  Less voltage means less penetration.  The amperage of a stun gun determines how quickly someone is affected by the stun.  Higher amperage means quicker affect.  1-2 milliamps is generally something that, again, while no one WANTS to feel this, can be taken by the human body for several seconds before causing someone to fully back off.  3 milliamps is what most stun guns work with and will cause some disorientation, and yes, possibly even physical incapacitation, possibly causing someone to fall to the ground.  4-4.5 milliamps is generally so much that very few bodies can withstand it for more than a second or two at best.  Many people become somewhat confused and disoriented with this level of amperage going through their body.  I’ve even seen a youtube video where some guy puts in a football bite protector to take this much amperage.  Kinda funny to watch as his point is that stun guns aren’t effective.  Yet, he has to suit up like that even sort of stumbles a second after taking the hit.  But, that’s for another article.

Anyway, now that we know what a stun gun is designed to do, what makes the Barracuda BC37 the best stun gun?  Well, as a visual deterrent, the sound and spark made by this thing is the most horrific sounding and looking spark you’ll see on any stun gun.  Dogs freak out and leave the room.  People jump when you test fire it.  It gets your attention.  The voltage is 3.7 million volts which is usually enough to penetrate up to, say a leather bomber.  And, the amperage is 4.5 milliamps which is the highest of any stun gun on the market and is just under that 5 milliamp mark we noted earlier as being lethal.

Add to the technical specs the fact that the battery is rechargeable and is a Nickel Metal Hydride battery, which, without going into all the technical support for this, is simply the best quality of battery to use and few stun gun makers use them due to their expense.  Also, the Barracuda BC37 is the only stun gun to use a double battery system for added life and extra power.  The A/C Charger is also built in so the owner doesn’t have to keep up with a separate charger allowing the owner to keep the unit sufficiently charged quite easily.  And, finally, but no less significant than the rest of these points, is that the unit comes with a safety disable pin, which when used, if an attacker tries to take away the unit from the owner, the pin pulls out and the stun gun simply cannot work and, thus, cannot be used on its owner.

Decide for yourself:  Is the Barracuda BC37 the best stun gun?
